When you undergo hip replacement surgery, you expect your implant to improve your mobility and overall well being. Unfortunately, not all hip implants are created equal, and some can even have the opposite effect. When implants do more harm than good, like in the case of Exactech’s Connexion GXL Hip Liner, those affected deserve to seek compensation.
If you are one of the thousands of patients who have experienced early deterioration of their Exactech hip liner, the team at Jenner Law can help you recover damages. Our Exactech hip recall lawyers will file a defective product claim on your behalf, and fight to secure the payment you need to cover your treatment and/or revision surgery.
Studies That Led to Exactech’s Connexion GXL Hip Liner Recall
Exactech’s Connexion GXL Hip Liner is made from a special plastic, designed to prevent the liner from weathering over time. Known as irradiated ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, this protective plastic might have proved well to extend the lifespan of Exactech’s hip liner, if it wasn’t for a defect in the product’s insert.
The defect was discussed in a study conducted at the University of Florida College of Medicine, which warned that it might cause the liner to deteriorate much earlier than expected. In a follow-up study, researchers found that deterioration, also referred to as early polyethylene failure, can occur in as little as five years after initial surgery.
Since early failure results in a number of debilitating symptoms that are only reversible through surgery, Exactech was forced to issue a recall of their Connexion GXL Hip Liner in 2021.
Seek Medical Attention if You Have a Recalled Exactech GXL Hip Liner
If you have one of Exactech’s hip liner implants, it’s strongly recommended that you have it checked out by a medical professional. A doctor can check for signs that point to early deterioration and device failure.
If your doctor finds evidence that your hip liner is failing, it’s possible that you’ll need revision surgery. During revision surgery, the defective device will be removed and replaced with one that doesn’t have a history of premature failure.
Signs That Your Recalled Exactech Hip Liner Is Failing
While there’s no substitute for a doctor’s evaluation, there are several signs and symptoms associated with device failure that you should look out for if you have an Exactech hip implant. If you experience any of the following symptoms, make sure to notify your physician as soon as possible:
- Hip pain, stiffness, or swelling
- Trouble walking
- Instability
- Limited range of motion
- Grinding noise
- Loosening of the joint
- Difficulty bearing weight on the joint
Early implant failure also causes debris to build up in your joint tissue, which can result in serious bone degeneration. Also known as secondary osteolysis, this condition can require extensive treatment and, in some cases, surgery.
Damages an Exactech Hip Implant Recall Lawyer Can Win for You
Early hip implant failure caused by recalled devices can cause a world of trouble for those affected by it. It can put you out of work, cause a significant amount of pain and inconvenience, and even require treatment and multiple expensive surgeries to remedy.
