In the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, March 26th, a large cargo ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The incident caused a segment of the bridge’s roadway to collapse into the Patapsco River and sent several construction workers plunging into the water.
So far, two of the workers, who were busy filling potholes when the collapse occurred, have been rescued from the river, one of whom was immediately hospitalized. According to local authorities, at least six others involved in the collapse are presumed dead.
Baltimore Officials Issue Statements on Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse
During a press conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott called the event an “unthinkable tragedy.” When asked to comment, Baltimore Fire Department Director of Communications Kevin Cartwright assured the public that the department’s main focus is rescuing and recovering the remaining individuals.
Because a cargo ship hit Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Maryland Department of Transportation has temporarily suspended all vessel traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore – which ranks as the 18th largest port in the United States. Officials have also closed all lanes of the bridge and implemented detour routes.
In response to the incident, Governor Wes Moor has declared a state of emergency in Maryland and is currently working to secure federal resources to address the situation.
The bridge is a significant part of the I-695 Baltimore Beltway, serving as the outer crossing of the Baltimore Harbor and including the Curtis Creek Drawbridge. It spans approximately 1.6 miles and, along with its approach roadways, the facility stretches around 10.9 miles in total. The bridge sees a significant amount of traffic, with around 11.3 million vehicles crossing annually.
The bridge not only plays a pivotal role in facilitating transportation and commerce but also stands as a historical marker, closely linked with American heritage and the story of the Star-Spangled Banner.
